To Do:

To start with general background research,

1. What is Korean architecture?
2. What is Western architecture?
3. What is "Contemporary"?

:D yay Korean Architecture.

It may be interesting to look at particular detail of traditional architecture (like ondol or the approach to korean landscape?) and see how the remnant or omission of vernacular building tradition relates to the modern architecture of today?

looking forward to reading more of your posts!! :P

Sunhi,

Your interest in working in the Korean Environment on a project that is being considered in the professional arena could be a rich experience for you.

My initial concern: Can you make a true connection with a “Korean architecture specialist” to be an informal “advisor/reader”. Can you find rich research literature and documentation of traditional Korean residential architecture? To be a valuable experience you need to make a connection with a specialized knowledge base from which you can mine information. Without this, your work will be uninformed and lack significant meaning. So please start by tracking down these resources that will help you understand “Korean Architecture”. Looks like the YEOL organization may be a gateway to collected research. Have you studied much of the history of Korean Architecture? Could you provide a short description of its key features.

Second: The actual project site and background. Can you acquire documentation on the “Traditional Korean House” you speak of? How big is it? What is the scale of intervention you are imagining. Has someone produced lots of photos and drawings of the existing house? If not, how will you be able to interact with the house? Are you able to document the house yourself? When? Can you acquire this in enough time to understand it and develop a reaction that will serve as foundation to your thesis? I hope this can be done very shortly.

The interesting piece of your project should be the meaningful confrontation between old and new. You will need to develop an attitude about each, and criteria that will govern your work.

In your next posting I would like to hear more about the knowledge you bring to the project.

Thanks.
